Does This Sound Like You?
You’re a smart, compassionate, goal-oriented hard worker who is eager to finally start applying your academics to real clients. You know how to hustle – you managed school, your personal life/family, your finances, and probably even a part time job. You’ve heard how competitive it is to get a solid practicum placement, and you really want to make sure you make the right choice. Maybe you ask yourself questions like:
- Will I get enough hours in time?
- Will I get exposure to the kind of clients I want to work with?
- Will the culture be supportive, team-oriented, and committed to my growth?
- Will I like my site? What if I don’t?
- How will I balance the demands of practicum with the demands of school?
- Will I have a mentor that teaches me what I need to know?
- Will I get stuck in something inflexible or hours I don’t want to work?
- Will I have to do a lot of admin stuff I’m not interested in, or will I leave with a solid foundation of knowing how to work with clients?
I was once there too.
Hi, I’m Jaclyn. And I really get it. It wasn’t long ago that I too was a Yorkville student that made a major career transition to become a counsellor and, I really wanted to make sure I had the right practicum site. As a highly sensitive person, I’m prone to anxiety, worry, overthinking, and having to make a major decision (like practicum) can make things challenging!
At the end of the day, I was glad I trusted my gut. I used the same skills I teach my clients in order to trust myself, trust the process, and make the absolute most of my experience.
And now that I’m on the other side of the table, I’m dedicated to making the process as simple, streamlined, and as fun (yes, fun) as possible.
Our Culture
At True Self Counselling, are committed to authenticity. We believe that helping clients to rediscover their inner wisdom is key to the healing process, and that guiding them to listen to and trust themselves are central tenets to the healing they seek.
We also believe that this ethos is not limited to our clients – it applies to the therapists who work here as well. When you are your authentic self, you’re in the best place to serve your clients. BUSINESS MENTORSHIP
With an MBA and ten years of international corporate business experience, your site supervisor is well suited to help you with the business side of therapy.
Our Approach
We take an integrative, client-centered approach to therapy, with a focus on being:
Trauma-Informed
Trauma isn't what happened to us - it's what happens inside of us as a result of what happened to us. Taking a non-pathological lens to therapy, our approach is rooted in attachment theory with an emphasis on the brain-body connection and nervous system regulation.
Neuroscience Based
Trauma is stored in the body, but it's held in there by the brain. We understand that our thoughts and beliefs create our feelings, and when left unconscious or unquestioned, these maladaptive thoughts will run our lives, keeping us stuck in patterns of unproductive behaviour.
Solutions Focused
t's important to heal the root of our trauma. And, it's also important that our clients feel better sooner rather than later. We believe in teaching our clients the skills required to take loving action in spite of negative emotion.

Hey There!
I’m Jaclyn – and I might be your new site supervisor! A bit about me…I’m also a Yorkville Grad! Prior to becoming a therapist, I worked in Medical Device Sales & Marketing, developing cutting edge products to treat peripheral arterial disease and structural heart failure. I have also completed a degree in Biochemistry & Biomedical Sciences from McMaster University, and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) also from Mac. I’ve travelled to nearly 60 countries, and have spent the last decade between Chicago and Arizona, and am now back in Ontario! When I’m not working with clients or travelling, I’m hanging out with my cat, my boyfriend, and my two “spirit children”. If completing practicum at my site feels like a good fit for you, please don’t hesitate to reach out by email hello@trueselfcounselling.ca or phone 289-270-1220. I can’t wait to meet you!
