Therapy Matched to What You’re Working Through

Most people don’t arrive with one tidy problem. Anxiety sits next to burnout, old family patterns show up in a relationship, and a late ADHD diagnosis changes how you see your whole past.

That’s why you don’t need to pick the perfect service before you start. Each page below explains one area in depth, so you can recognize your own experience and see how therapy approaches it. When you book, we match you with a therapist whose focus fits the whole picture, not just the first thing you searched for.

Every session happens online over secure video, so where you live in Ontario doesn’t limit who you can see. Our team includes Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying), with lower-cost sessions offered by Masters Level Resident Interns.

What We Help With

Each service has its own page covering what it looks like day to day, how sessions work and which therapists focus on it.

Anxiety and Mood

For the constant worry, the overthinking that won’t switch off, the flatness that makes ordinary days heavy, and the feelings that arrive faster than you can manage them.

Trauma

For what happened, and for what it left behind: the hypervigilance, the flashbacks, the patterns that started long before you had words for them. Trauma work is paced so you feel steady before anything is processed.

ADHD and Neurodivergence

For brains that work differently, whether you’re diagnosed, self-identified or still wondering. Support that works with how you actually function instead of trying to make you look like everyone else.

Relationships, Family and Self

For the patterns you learned early and keep repeating, the yes you say before thinking, and the relationship that matters too much to keep fighting about the same things.

Loss and Identity

For grief that doesn’t follow neat stages, and for being fully yourself in therapy without having to explain the basics first.

How Getting Started Works

The same simple process applies whichever service you’re looking at, and everything happens online.

  1. Pick a Time

Choose a free 15 to 20 minute consultation slot and tell us a little about what’s going on.

  2. We Match You

Behind the scenes, we pair you with a therapist based on what you’re working through, how you like to work and your background, then confirm your appointment by email or text.

  3. Free Meet & Greet With Your Therapist

Ask your questions and assess fit. Start sessions within days and schedule with them directly.

Approaches Our Therapists Draw On

Every therapist has their own style. Depending on who you work with and what you’re working through, sessions may draw on one or more of these approaches, grounded in a trauma-informed way of working.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Notices the thoughts and assumptions that keep a problem going, and practises new ways of responding in the moment.

Emotion-Focused Therapy

Looks beneath what you do to the feelings and needs driving it, so you can respond to them with more understanding.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Builds the ability to stay with difficult feelings without being run by them, and to act on what matters to you.

Somatic and Nervous System Work

Pays attention to what happens in your body, so you can settle enough to think clearly when things feel too much.

EMDR and DBT Informed Skills

Offered by the therapists who list them: EMDR for processing difficult memories, and DBT informed skills for distress and overwhelm.

Gottman Method

For couples: a research-based approach that strengthens your bond, helps you manage conflict without escalating, and builds shared meaning in your relationship.

Looking for a particular approach? Let us know when you book and we’ll match you with a therapist who works that way.

Using Your Benefits

Many extended health benefit plans cover psychotherapy, but plans differ. We provide a receipt after every session so you can submit your claim.

Before you book, check with your plan:

  • Whether it covers services provided by a psychotherapist, or psychotherapy
  • Which provider types it covers, such as Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying)
  • How much coverage you have each year
  • Whether it asks for a doctor’s referral before reimbursing

Online Therapy Anywhere in Ontario

Because every session is online, you can work with the same therapist whether you live in a large city or a small town, and keep them if you move within the province.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does True Self Counselling help with?
We offer online therapy for anxiety, social anxiety, depression, emotion regulation, trauma, complex trauma, ADHD, neurodivergence, grief, boundaries, people pleasing and family-of-origin work, as well as couples therapy and 2SLGBTQ+ affirming therapy.
How do I know which service is right for me?
You don’t have to choose alone. Book a free 15 to 20 minute consultation and tell us a little about what’s going on. We match you based on what you’re working through, how you like to work and your background. If it’s not the right fit, just let us know and we’ll match you again until you find the right fit for you.
What if what I’m dealing with crosses more than one area?
That’s very common. Anxiety often sits alongside burnout, and trauma can show up in relationships. We match you with a therapist whose focus fits the whole picture rather than one label.
How much does therapy cost?
Individual sessions are $90 through Affordable Care with Masters Level Resident Interns, $100 to $160 on our Sliding Scale, and from $170 for Standard and Specialty. Couples sessions are priced separately. Your first consultation is free.
How long is a therapy session?
Individual sessions are 50 minutes. Couples sessions are 60 or 75 minutes, and your free consultation beforehand is 15 to 20 minutes.
Does OHIP cover therapy?
OHIP does not cover private psychotherapy. Many extended health benefit plans include psychotherapy coverage, and we provide a receipt after every session for you to submit.
Is there a waitlist?
No. True Self Counselling has no waitlist. Most people book a free consultation and begin sessions within days.
Do I need a referral?
No. You don’t need a doctor’s referral to see one of our therapists. Some extended health benefit plans ask for a referral before they reimburse psychotherapy, so it’s worth checking your plan.
Do you provide assessments or diagnoses?
No. We provide therapy. In Ontario, a formal diagnosis comes from a physician, psychiatrist or psychologist. Our therapists work with people whether or not they have a diagnosis.
