Everything Looks Fine, Which Is Part of the Problem

When everyone around you seems to be managing, it is hard to say out loud that something is wrong. From the outside it all looks fine. The kids are busy, the work gets done, the calendar is full. And still you are awake at two in the morning running the same loop.

We are a virtual practice serving all of Ontario, so there is no clinic door to be seen walking through and no waiting room where the parent from your child’s hockey team could be sitting two seats over. Your session is a video call behind a closed door.

You get someone who can hear the polished version and gently get underneath it. We match you ourselves, rather than handing you whoever has a gap on Tuesday.

Who Tends to Get in Touch From Oakville

Almost nobody arrives in a crisis. People come after a long stretch of holding something up and finding the cost has landed in their sleep, their marriage or their health.

  • People pleasers who volunteer for the gala committee again and want to say no without rehearsing the apology all evening
  • Highly sensitive people who feel the tension at the dinner table before anyone speaks, and are done being told to lighten up
  • People building emotion regulation skills because they swing from holding it together to falling apart, with no middle setting
  • Adults raised in houses where approval arrived with results and never on its own
  • Parents of high-achieving teenagers, carrying tryouts, averages and applications alongside their own guilt
  • Moms carrying the mental load of the whole household, and wondering when anyone last asked how they are
  • Couples who look enviable at a fundraiser and barely speak on the drive home
  • People whose partner is drinking or using more than they are comfortable with, and who are tired of being the one who notices
  • People going through separation or a recent divorce, setting up a new home, a new weekly rhythm and a parenting schedule from nothing
  • Social drinkers who have started to wonder whether the second glass most nights is really about winding down
  • People in perimenopause whose sleep, mood and patience have changed and who are tired of being told it is just stress
  • Capable people whose ADHD went unnoticed for decades because the grades covered for it
  • Executives, lawyers, physicians and founders who perform all day and have nothing civil left by dinner
  • People running on career stress and burnout, who keep promising themselves things will calm down after this quarter
  • People whose only unclaimed hour of the day is the one after everyone else is asleep
  • Anyone who would rather not be recognized in a local waiting room
  • Teachers, nurses, paramedics and firefighters who spend a shift absorbing other people’s worst days

Anxiety, ADHD and Trauma Counselling for People Who Look Like They Have It Handled

Anxiety, ADHD and trauma are among the most common reasons people here reach out, and they usually arrive together and well hidden. You get everyone where they need to be, answer the email at ten at night, and smile through the Saturday between the rink and the lake. Inside, your shoulders have not dropped in months and your sleep breaks at the same hour every night.

That is anxiety doing its job too well. It keeps you scanning for what could go wrong, and it settles in the body first: a tight jaw, a stomach that knots before a school meeting, a heart that races on a perfectly quiet evening.

Plenty of the time, the worry is covering ADHD that went unspotted because strong marks and hard work hid it. Lists, phone reminders and the rush of a deadline kept everything upright, until a promotion, a second child or perimenopause piled on one more thing and the system gave out. The first hint is often your child’s assessment, which reads like a description of your own days. None of that is a willpower problem.

And sometimes the root is older. Nothing dramatic happened, and there is no single event to point at. There was a household where love and results came bundled, criticism was delivered as encouragement, and being fine was the price of admission. Growing up on edge like that leaves marks: a body on alert in ordinary rooms, a neutral email read as disapproval, and sudden waves of shame or panic that feel far bigger than the moment. Those are emotional flashbacks, and they are a recognized part of complex trauma.

The work is gentler than most people brace for. It starts with what your nervous system is protecting, then gets practical, at your pace. Anxiety therapy, ADHD therapy and trauma therapy are the usual starting points, our complex trauma page sets out the pacing, and if your parents are still in the picture and still doing it, emotionally immature parents is where to start.

Couples Counselling When the Marriage Runs Like a Company

The relationship strain we see most here is not a blow-up. Two competent adults run a household beautifully. Calendars sync and everyone gets where they need to be. Underneath the logistics, neither of you has said anything real in months.

It shows up as politeness, scorekeeping about who did more, and affection rescheduled so often nobody raises it. Then something about the dishwasher becomes forty minutes of something much older, and you both go to bed certain the other one started it.

Couples therapy looks at the pattern, not the play-by-play of last Tuesday: how things escalate between you, who withdraws and who pursues, what each complaint is really asking for, and how you make up afterwards. You can share one screen or join from separate places. If one of you goes silent while the other is flooded, we begin with emotion regulation, since two overwhelmed nervous systems cannot hold a real conversation.

When One of You Has a Foot Out the Door

A steady number of people here search for discernment counselling, which tells you how many marriages in this town are being held together by logistics while one partner privately decides.

That is workable, and it belongs on the table in the first conversation. The point is not to talk anyone into staying. It is to slow the decision down so it gets made deliberately instead of in the heat of an argument or after another year of drift. Some couples find their way back once the thing nobody would name is in the room. Others separate with far less wreckage for themselves and their kids.

Partner not ready? Come by yourself. Individual sessions about a marriage usually end up on boundaries and on everything you have been swallowing to keep home running smoothly.

Anxiety That Passes for High Standards

Around here anxiety rarely stops anyone functioning. It gets promoted. It looks like preparation and thoroughness, and it costs a fortune in sleep. You reread a sent message four times, rehearse a conversation in the car, and leave a meeting that went perfectly well convinced you said one wrong thing.

We start with what the anxiety is doing for you, because it is usually protecting something worth understanding before you try to switch it off. Then the work is practical: catching the early physical signal, interrupting a spiral before it gathers speed, tolerating good enough.

If the dread is social rather than professional, look at social anxiety. If the edge has worn into flatness and nothing interests you, depression may be what is on the table. Our anxiety therapy page explains how the work usually runs.

How It Works

Most people go from first message to first session in a few days.

  1. Pick a Time

Pick a free 15 to 20 minute consultation time and share a few lines about what brings you in.

  2. We Match You

We weigh what you are working through, your communication style and your background, pick a therapist to match, and confirm the booking by email or text.

  3. Free Meet & Greet With Your Therapist

Ask whatever you want to know and see how the fit feels. Book with them directly when you are ready, usually within days.

What Happens in Your Meet & Greet

The meet & greet is your chance to explain what is going on, what you hope therapy will do, your background and your goals, and to hear how the therapist approaches the work. It comes down to one thing: does this person feel like a good fit? If so, you arrange your first session with them yourself. If not, just say so and we will find a different match. Most clients settle in with the first therapist we suggest.

All sessions are held over secure video. Bring a private room and a stable internet connection.

How People Pay for Therapy

There is an assumption about this town that stops people getting help: that everyone can obviously afford what they need. Plenty of households here look substantial and have almost nothing uncommitted once the mortgage, the tuition and the sports have taken their share. Asking what something costs feels like an admission, so the therapy never gets booked. Ask.

  • Your extended health plan. Most include psychotherapy. Check which designations yours accepts and what the annual maximum is.
  • Sliding Scale. $100 to $160 a session, for when your plan is modest or used up for the year.
  • Affordable Care. $90 per session, and used here more than people expect. It is for anyone for whom $170 is not realistic right now.

You can book three kinds of clinician here: Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying), both registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, and pre-licensed Master’s-level psychotherapy interns. An RP (Qualifying) works with clients under clinical supervision while completing the last steps toward full registration. Affordable Care sessions are with Master’s-level psychotherapy interns, supervised by highly experienced psychotherapists. None of them require a referral.

Nobody Needs to Know You Are Doing This

For many people here this is the deciding factor. Oakville is small enough that a car outside a building gets noticed and a face in a reception area gets placed by the second Saturday of hockey season. Therapy gets postponed for a year over exactly that.

Going online takes that worry away. There is no building to enter, no clipboard at a front desk and no car parked outside. Clients join us from Bronte, Kerr Village, Old Oakville, Glen Abbey, River Oaks, Clearview and Palermo, and the hour is the same from each. We use an encrypted video platform made for healthcare, and your therapist carries the same duty of confidentiality as any clinician in the province. All you need is a door that shuts and a reliable connection.

Questions We Get From Oakville

Do your therapists use CBT?
Cognitive behavioural tools are part of how our therapists work, especially with panic, rumination and avoidance. They also draw on trauma focused, somatic and attachment based approaches, because worksheets alone rarely settle a pattern this old.
The tension in my house is about my teenager. Can therapy still help me?
Often, yes. Parents come to us carrying averages, tryouts, applications and a child who has stopped talking to them, plus guilt about handling it badly. The work is with you: what you can influence, what you cannot, and how to stop a house revolving around one person’s performance.
Do you offer trauma therapy and EMDR?
Yes. Trauma therapy with us is paced rather than pushed, and nothing is opened before you have something steady to stand on. EMDR is available with therapists trained in it.
Do you offer couples counselling and marriage counselling to Oakville clients?
Yes. The two names describe the same work: a single video call with both of you on it, looking at how you fight, pull away and patch things up. Sit side by side, or log in separately if one of you is still at the office.
What if one of us is not sure they want to stay?
It is workable, and better named in the first call than in session six. When one partner has a foot out the door, the work is slowing the decision down so it gets made on purpose rather than mid-argument. Some couples find their way back, others separate with less damage.
Can I come on my own to talk about my marriage?
Yes. Lots of people begin solo, either because their partner is not ready or because they need room to think somewhere other than the kitchen late at night. The work tends to centre on boundaries, built-up resentment and what you take on to keep things calm.
How are your fees set up?
There are three levels. Affordable Care costs $90 a session with a Master’s-level psychotherapy intern. Sliding Scale is $100 to $160. Standard and Specialty begins at $170 with our more experienced therapists. Each individual session is 50 minutes.
Is Affordable Care only for people with no income?
No. It is there for anyone for whom $170 a session is not realistic right now, which here includes households whose money is already committed to a mortgage, tuition and the calendar. Tell us what is sustainable when you book.
Does OHIP cover this, and will my benefits plan?
OHIP leaves private psychotherapy out. Most extended health plans pay for part of it, up to a yearly limit that weekly sessions can use up before December. You get a receipt after every session.
Do you offer direct billing to my insurance?
Not yet. We don’t currently offer direct billing, but we’re working on it. For now, you pay for each session and we send a receipt you can submit to your extended health plan for reimbursement.
How soon could I start, and do I need a referral from my doctor?
You can book a Registered Psychotherapist in Ontario without a referral, and we have no waitlist. Most people take the free consultation, meet their therapist within a few days and carry on from there. A few benefits plans ask for a referral before paying out, so check your own.
What are your therapists’ credentials?
You will work with a Registered Psychotherapist, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) or a pre-licensed Master’s-level psychotherapy intern. RPs and RP (Qualifying) clinicians are registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. Affordable Care sessions are with Master’s-level psychotherapy interns, supervised by highly experienced psychotherapists.
Do you work with adults who have only recently found out they have ADHD?
Yes, often, and especially with people whose achievements masked it for decades. ADHD or autism recognized late in a capable adult tends to bring exhaustion, private shame about effort no one notices, and routines that no longer hold. Our approach is neurodivergent affirming from start to finish.
