A Burlington Week Leaves Almost No Room for an Appointment
A full workday, whether at the office or at the kitchen table. Someone needs picking up, dinner needs making, and the inbox is still open at nine. Therapy becomes the thing you will sort out next month, and then the month after.
True Self Counselling is an Ontario wide virtual practice, so a session is a closed door and a video call. Nothing to drive to, nothing to park, and no chance of running into your neighbour in a reception area.
We also do the matching for you. You say what is going on when you book, and we pair you with a therapist based on that, your communication style and your background, rather than on who happens to have a Tuesday free.
Who We Work With in Burlington
Burlington is comfortable and quiet, and from the outside very little here looks like distress. Most of what clients bring us comes from the shape of the week rather than one dramatic event, and it has usually been building for years before anyone calls it a problem.
- Chronic people pleasers who agree on autopilot and would like to hold a line with no guilt spiral afterwards
- Highly sensitive people who notice every change in a room and have heard “you are too much” once too often
- Adults whose emotions flip from calm to overwhelmed in a heartbeat, and who want to keep their balance when it counts
- Professionals whose anxiety only shows itself at 3 a.m. or on a Sunday evening
- Parents juggling school runs, practices and a full workday, who feel guilty for finding it hard
- Adults recognizing ADHD or autism in themselves after a child was assessed
- People in their forties noticing that perimenopause has turned up the volume on worry, poor sleep and a scattered mind
- Couples who have stopped arguing and started managing each other politely instead
- Anyone going through a separation or recent divorce, piecing together a household, a weekly rhythm and a shared parenting plan
- People whose workday, at the office or at home, takes everything and leaves nothing for anyone
- Empty nesters working out who they are to each other now the house has gone quiet
- Older adults facing retirement, a health change or a loss nobody planned for
- Anyone who would rather not be seen walking into a clinic in a city where they know people
Anxiety, ADHD and Trauma Therapy for People Who Are Coping Well
Anxiety is what this city searches for more than anything else, and it is rarely the kind that stops someone functioning. It is the kind that keeps performing. Rehearsing a conversation on the drive in. Rereading a sent email. A tight chest through a meeting that went perfectly fine.
For a lot of people here, the anxiety is resting on ADHD that nobody named. Lists, reminders and adrenaline kept the school runs, the workday and the family calendar moving for years, until a promotion, a new baby or perimenopause added one more thing and the system gave way. Often the penny drops in a child’s assessment, when the description sounds a lot like you at that age. That is not a willpower problem.
For others the root is older. If you grew up on edge, keeping an eye on a parent’s mood to know how the evening would go, your body can stay braced long after the house has changed. A sudden rush of shame or dread that is far bigger than the moment is often an emotional flashback. That is trauma too, even if nothing dramatic ever happened, and trauma therapy works with it carefully and at your pace.
Work starts with what the anxiety is doing for you, because it is usually protecting something. From there it moves to your body as much as your thoughts: catching the early signal, slowing the spiral before it picks up speed, saying the harder sentence without bracing for the fallout. Some people want a few focused weeks around one situation. Others go back to where the habit was learned and take it apart properly.
If it shows up as short sleep, tears that come out of nowhere or a stomach that reacts before you do, it still counts and it is workable. You can read how we approach anxiety therapy and ADHD therapy, or look at social anxiety and emotion regulation if either of those lands closer.
Couples Counselling When the Week Has Taken Over
Relationship strain comes up a lot here, and the version we see most is not a crisis. It is two people who have become excellent at logistics and have quietly stopped talking about anything else.
Long workdays do this on their own. One of you finishes at seven, the other has already done bedtime, and the conversation shrinks to who is covering what tomorrow. A year of that, and small resentments stop being small. Because sessions are online, you can both make the same evening without arranging childcare, sitting together at home or joining separately if one of you is still at work.
Couples therapy with us focuses on how the two of you argue, repair and ask for what you need, rather than on relitigating last Tuesday. We also work with people individually about a relationship when a partner is not ready to join, which often starts with boundaries and what you have been absorbing to keep the peace.

How It Works
For most people, first contact to first session takes days rather than weeks.
-
Pick a Time
Grab any open slot for the free 15 to 20 minute consultation, and jot down a line or two about why you are reaching out.
-
We Match You
Your answers guide our pick: what you are dealing with, how you like to talk things through and where you come from. Once we have chosen, a confirmation reaches you by email or text.
-
Free Meet & Greet With Your Therapist
There is no charge for this introduction. Ask anything, notice how it feels, and if it works, set up sessions with your therapist directly, usually within days.
What Happens in Your Meet & Greet
Come ready to cover the basics: what has been weighing on you, what a good outcome would look like, a bit of your story and what you are aiming for. Ask how they run their sessions too. The point is to judge whether you could be candid with this person. If you could, schedule your first session with them directly. If not, say the word and we will re-match you. In most cases the first match holds.
From your end, you only need a private place to talk and an internet connection that will not drop out.

Extended health plans often cover sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), as well as sessions with a therapist supervised by a Registered Psychotherapist. Check your plan, and keep the receipt we send after every session.
Fees, Benefits and What to Check Before You Book
OHIP does not cover private psychotherapy, so sessions are paid either out of pocket or through a benefits plan. In practice, most people pay less than they expected once they have looked at four things.
- Your extended health benefits. Most plans include psychotherapy. Check which provider designations yours accepts and what your annual maximum is. We issue a receipt after every session for you to submit.
- A health spending account. Many employers offer one, and therapy is an eligible expense under most.
- Sliding scale. Fees between $100 and $160 for years when your plan is small or already spent by spring.
- Affordable Care. $90 a session when money is tight or there is no insurance to lean on.
- The free consultation. Individual sessions are 50 minutes, and the first 15 to 20 minute call costs nothing, so you spend no money before you know whether the fit is right.
You might work with a Registered Psychotherapist, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) or a pre-licensed Master’s-level psychotherapy intern. RPs and RP(Q)s are registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, and an RP(Q) practises under clinical supervision while completing full registration. Affordable Care sessions are with Master’s-level interns, supervised by highly experienced psychotherapists. Any of them can be booked without a referral.
Privacy, in a City Where You Know People
Burlington is large enough to have everything and small enough that you see someone you know at the grocery store. Plenty of people here put therapy off for a year or more over who might notice the car, the building or the walk to a front desk.
Online takes that whole question off the table. There is no reception area, no sign-in sheet and no parking lot. We work with clients in Aldershot, Roseland, Millcroft, Alton Village, Tyandaga, Headon Forest, down by the waterfront and out toward Waterdown, and the session is identical from every one of them.
The video platform is encrypted and designed for health care, and your therapist has the same duty of confidentiality as any clinician in Ontario. On your end, all it takes is a private space and a dependable connection. A bedroom with the door shut, a spare room or a parked car all do the job.
Online also means you are not choosing from the therapists within driving distance. You are choosing from all of them, which is usually what makes the difference.
