Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions potential clients ask most often about therapy with True Self Counselling. Can’t find what you’re looking for? Get in touch or book a free 15-20 minute consultation.

How much does therapy cost at True Self Counselling?

Individual therapy is $170 per 50-minute session and couples therapy is $190 per session. Our Affordable Therapy Program offers sliding-scale sessions from $75 to $100 with supervised therapists. We accept extended health benefits and provide receipts for reimbursement.

How quickly can I start therapy after reaching out?

We have no waitlist, so most clients begin therapy within 24 to 48 hours. After a free 15 to 20 minute video consultation with your matched therapist, you can book your first session as soon as their schedule allows. Some clients start the same day.

Do you serve clients in my city?

Yes, if you live anywhere in Ontario. All sessions are conducted online via secure video, so we serve Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, London, Windsor, Kingston, Mississauga, Barrie, and every other city and town across the province. You only need a private space and a stable internet connection.

What makes True Self Counselling different from other therapy practices?

We match clients to therapists based on goals, communication style, and lived experience rather than random assignment by availability. There is no waitlist, so you can typically start within 24 to 48 hours of reaching out. Many of our 35 therapists are second-career professionals who bring outside work and life experience into their practice.

Do you offer a free consultation before the first paid session?

Yes. We offer a free 15 to 20 minute video consultation with your potential therapist so you can meet them, ask questions, and decide if it’s a good fit. There is no obligation to book a paid session afterward.

What therapy approaches do your therapists use?

Our therapists use evidence-based modalities including CBT, IFS, DBT, ACT, EMDR, somatic therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches. Your therapist will draw from the methods that fit your specific needs rather than applying a single fixed approach.

Do extended health benefits cover psychotherapy at True Self Counselling?

Most extended health benefit plans that include psychotherapy will cover our sessions. We provide a receipt after each session that you submit directly to your provider for reimbursement. We do not offer direct billing at this time.

What kinds of clients do you usually work with?

We work with adults and couples, with a focus on high-functioning people who often appear to have it together but are struggling internally — highly sensitive people, empaths, neurodivergent individuals, and high achievers with complex family histories. Many of our clients have tried therapy before and felt like they were only venting without making real progress.

Do you offer LGBTQ+ affirming therapy?

Yes. Several therapists on our team specialize in LGBTQ+ affirming care and provide a safe, explicitly supportive space for clients of all gender identities and sexual orientations.

How are online therapy sessions delivered?

All sessions take place over secure video across Ontario. Individual sessions are 50 minutes long. You only need a private space and a device with a camera and stable internet — your therapist will share the meeting link before each appointment.
