You Can Love Each Other and Still Feel Stuck

Most couples don’t come to therapy because the relationship is over. They come because something important keeps getting lost between them.

Maybe every conversation about money, chores or family turns into the same fight. Maybe one of you wants to talk things through while the other shuts down. Or maybe nothing is “wrong” exactly, but the closeness you used to have has quietly faded under work, kids and everything else.

Couples therapy gives you both a place to slow those moments down. Your therapist helps you see the pattern you keep getting caught in, understand what each of you actually needs, and practise new ways of talking so that hard conversations stop turning into distance.

You don’t need to be in crisis to start. Many couples find it easiest to begin while they still care about fixing things, before resentment has had years to build.

Commitment

Before a Big Step

Uncertainty

Unsure About the Future

Get clarity when one or both of you are questioning whether to stay together, and make that decision with care.

Is Couples Therapy Right for You?

Couples therapy can help when you both want things to feel different but keep ending up in the same place. It works best when each partner is willing to show up, listen and look honestly at their own part in the pattern.

You don’t both need to feel the same level of hope. It’s common for one partner to feel more ready than the other at the start. What matters is a shared willingness to try.

Couples therapy may be a good fit if you:

  • Keep having the same argument without resolving it
  • Feel more like roommates than partners
  • Struggle to talk about money, sex, family or chores without conflict
  • Are adjusting to a new baby, a move or another big change
  • Want to rebuild trust after something painful happened
  • Want to strengthen a good relationship before problems grow

How Couples Therapy Works

Getting started is simple, and everything happens online.

  1. Pick a Time

Choose a free 15–20 minute consultation slot and tell us a little about what’s going on.

  2. We Match You

Behind the scenes, we pair you with a couples therapist based on what you’re working through, your communication style and your background, then confirm your appointment by email or text.

  3. Free Meet & Greet With Your Therapist

Ask your questions and assess fit. Start sessions within days and schedule with them directly.

What Happens in Your First Couples Session

Starting couples therapy can feel vulnerable, especially if you’re not sure what will come up. Your first session is about getting a clear picture of your relationship, not about deciding who is right.

Your therapist will usually ask what brought you in, how long things have felt this way and what each of you hopes will change. You’ll also talk about what has helped in the past and what hasn’t.

By the end of your first session, you can expect to:

  • Feel heard by someone who isn’t taking sides
  • Understand the pattern your therapist sees between you
  • Agree on goals you both want to work toward
  • Know what the next few sessions will focus on

Couples sessions are 60 or 75 minutes, and every session takes place over secure video.

Approaches Our Couples Therapists Draw On

Every therapist has their own style. Depending on who you work with, your sessions may draw on one or more of these approaches, adapted to your relationship and grounded in a trauma-informed way of working.

Emotion-Focused Therapy

Looks beneath recurring conflict to the emotions and needs driving it, so you can respond to each other with more understanding.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Helps you notice the thoughts and assumptions that fuel arguments, and practise new ways of responding in the moment.

Solution-Focused Therapy

Builds on what is already working and the small, concrete changes that move you toward the relationship you want.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Strengthens your ability to stay with difficult feelings without reacting, and to act on what matters to you as a couple.

Gottman Method

A research-based approach that strengthens your bond, helps you manage conflict without escalating, and builds shared meaning in your relationship.

Somatic and Nervous System Work

Helps you notice what happens in your body during conflict, so you can settle enough to actually hear each other.

Using Your Benefits for Couples Therapy

Many extended health benefit plans cover psychotherapy, but plans differ. Before you book, check whether your plan covers services provided by a psychotherapist, or psychotherapy, which provider types it covers (such as Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying)) and how much coverage you have each year. We provide a receipt after every session so you can submit your claim.

Online Couples Therapy Anywhere in Ontario

Because every session is online, you can work with the same therapist whether you live downtown, in the suburbs or in a small town.

Getting the Most From Online Couples Sessions

  • Find a private space where you won’t be overheard or interrupted
  • Test your camera, microphone and internet connection beforehand
  • Sit side by side so your therapist can see you both
  • Silence notifications and put other screens away
  • Give yourselves a few quiet minutes after each session before jumping back into the day

Yes. Several of our therapists who see couples list 2SLGBTQ+ issues and neurodiversity, including ADHD, among their areas of focus.
How do we choose the right therapist?
You don’t have to choose alone. We match you based on what you’re working through, your communication style and your background. If it’s not the right fit, just let us know and we’ll match you again until you find the right fit for you.
