Therapy That Fits Around Work and Family
Most people who look for a therapist in Hamilton are not short on reasons to go. They are short on a weekday afternoon. The week is already built around a full workload, meetings that run long, a daycare pickup on the West Mountain or a workday that runs past six.
That is the problem we are built around. Because True Self Counselling works entirely online across Ontario, there is no office to get to and no waitlist to join, and most people move from a first enquiry to a first full session within a week.
Nor do we assign whoever happens to be free. Your match is based on what you are working through, the way you like to be spoken to and your background, so your first session starts in a useful place.
Who We Work With in Hamilton
Hamilton is a city of hardworking people, and a lot of them are running on empty. The manager answering emails after the kids are in bed, the teacher planning tomorrow’s lessons at the kitchen table, the nurse who holds it together all day and comes home with nothing left, the family that bought here because Toronto was impossible and is still finding its feet. The strain rarely arrives as a crisis. It arrives as broken sleep, a flat feeling on days off, and a sense of managing rather than living.
- Chronic people pleasers who agree to things before checking in with themselves, and want to hold a line without feeling awful about it
- Highly sensitive people who soak up every mood around them and run out of energy well before the day ends
- People whose emotions take over in the moment and then echo for days, who want a way to come back down sooner
- Parents split between school on the Mountain and work in the lower city, crossing the escarpment twice a day on fumes
- Adults recognizing ADHD or autism in themselves in their thirties or later, rethinking a lifetime of being called lazy or difficult
- People in perimenopause noticing that sleep, mood and focus have all changed, and wanting more than a shrug and a suggestion to rest
- Professionals and managers who are steady at work and running on empty everywhere else
- Teachers, early childhood educators and education workers who give all day and have nothing left by dinner
- McMaster students, grad students, staff and faculty riding the spike and crash of the academic year
- People who moved here for a house they could afford and still don’t know anyone on their street
- Couples who have stopped fighting because it never goes anywhere, and want marriage counselling that gets past the same three arguments
- People working through complex trauma or growing up with emotionally immature parents, often while still seeing that family every Sunday
Anxiety, ADHD and Trauma Counselling in Hamilton
Of everything people in Hamilton ask us about, anxiety, ADHD and trauma come up most, and they rarely arrive one at a time. The person on the other end of the consultation is usually doing fine by every outside measure and quietly exhausted by what it takes.
Anxiety tends to show up as a full inbox that never feels finished. You rehearse Monday’s conversation on Sunday night, check the stove twice, and replay one awkward comment for a week. Your body knows before you do: the clenched jaw, the stomach that will not settle, the 3 a.m. wake-up with a list already running.
For a lot of people, the worry is resting on ADHD that was never named. You were the organized one because you had to be, held up by lists, phone alarms and adrenaline at the last minute. It worked until life added one more load, a promotion, a new baby or the start of perimenopause, and the scaffolding came down. Many people only recognize it when their son or daughter is assessed and every line sounds familiar. None of that means you were not trying hard enough.
For some, the root goes further back. Growing up on edge, waiting to see what mood came through the door at the end of the day, can teach a nervous system to stay on guard for good. Emotional flashbacks, when a tone of voice suddenly makes you feel small, ashamed or alone in a way that does not fit the moment, are a common sign of complex trauma. It does not take one big event, and trauma therapy goes at your pace.
Sessions start with how things are now and get practical: separating what you can act on from what you are only rehearsing, building systems that suit how your attention works, and helping your body stand down when nothing is actually wrong.
Most people start with anxiety therapy or ADHD therapy, and plenty find they need a bit of each. If it shows up as overwhelm or shutdown rather than worry, emotion regulation may be the place to begin.
Why Hamilton Clients Choose to Do This Online
In some parts of this city everybody knows everybody. Westdale, Dundas, Ancaster, the north end, the older pockets on the Mountain: you see the same faces at the arena, the pharmacy and the market. For many people that is the best thing about living here, and it is also why they put off looking for a therapist. A waiting room two streets from your kid’s school is its own kind of exposure.
There is no waiting room here. You open a link in a private space, and afterwards you are already home. Nobody watches you arrive, and nobody sees you leave with red eyes.
The geography helps too. An appointment that would have meant the Jolley Cut at rush hour, parking downtown and the same trip back becomes fifty minutes and nothing else, which matters most in the months when all of that happens in snow. It also widens the field: instead of the therapists within driving distance of your postal code, you can choose the one whose experience actually lines up with yours.

Across the practice you will find Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying). See the whole team if you would like to look further.
How It Works
Getting started rarely takes more than a few days from your first note to us.
-
Pick a Time
Book a free 15 to 20 minute consultation at a time that works and jot down a line or two about what brings you here.
-
We Match You
We look at what you are dealing with, how you prefer to communicate and your background, pick the therapist best suited to you, and confirm the appointment by email or text.
-
Free Meet & Greet With Your Therapist
Your therapist meets you for free. Ask what you want to know and decide whether it feels right; if it does, you can be in regular sessions within days, booked with them directly.
What Happens in Your Meet & Greet
This first conversation is yours to steer. Tell your therapist what has been going on, what you would like to be different and what about your history they should know, and ask how they approach the work. The point is to find out whether the two of you can work together. If yes, you schedule your first session with them directly. If not, let us know and we will find you a different match. Most people get it right on the first match.
For the sessions themselves you will want a private room and an internet connection you can count on.
Psychotherapist, Psychologist or Psychiatrist: What’s the Difference?
Look for mental health services in Hamilton, Ontario and you will see all three titles, often used loosely. They are different jobs, and the difference shapes both the help you receive and what OHIP or your benefits will pay for.
Registered Psychotherapist
Offers talk therapy for things like anxiety, trauma, relationship strain and big life changes. Overseen by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). OHIP does not pay, but extended health plans often do.
Psychologist
Typically trained to the doctoral level, and able to assess and diagnose mental health conditions as well as offer therapy. Overseen by the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario. Private visits are not OHIP-funded.
Psychiatrist
A physician who diagnoses mental health conditions and can prescribe medication. OHIP covers the visits, which usually need a referral from your family doctor or a nurse practitioner.
At True Self Counselling you will find Registered Psychotherapists, Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying) and pre-licensed Master’s-level psychotherapy interns. An RP(Q) is registered with the CRPO and works under clinical supervision until full registration is complete. Affordable Care sessions are with Master’s-level psychotherapy interns, supervised by highly experienced psychotherapists.
Special Approach to Every Client
We have three levels of service based on the experience of the clinician and your financial needs.
Affordable Care
- Sessions completed with a Masters Level Resident Intern working under supervision.
- Receipts provided for reimbursement.
- Ideal for clients experiencing hardship.
Sliding Scale
- Sessions completed with a Masters Level Resident Intern or Advanced Therapists offering sliding scale.
- Receipts provided for reimbursement.
- Ideal for clients with limited health insurance.
Standard & Specialty
- Sessions completed with therapists with higher levels of experience or with specialized care with different issues.
- Ideal for clients with health insurance coverage.
All sessions are online over secure video. We don’t offer in-person therapy in Hamilton.
Extended health plans often cover sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), as well as sessions with a therapist supervised by a Registered Psychotherapist. Check your plan, and keep the receipt we send after every session.
Paying for It When the Plan Runs Out in August
Private psychotherapy sits outside OHIP, which is the part most people trip over. Here is how Hamilton clients usually cover it.
- Extended health benefits. Hospital, municipal, school board and union plans often include psychotherapy, sometimes generously. Check your annual maximum and which designations your plan names, because plans treat a Registered Psychotherapist, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) and a supervised intern differently. We issue a receipt after every session.
- A health spending account. Some employers top up benefits with an account you can put toward therapy once the psychology or psychotherapy line is used up.
- Student and family coverage. If you are at McMaster or Mohawk, look at what your student health plan covers and whether you are still on a parent’s plan as well. The two sometimes stack.
- Sliding scale. $100 to $160 a session when coverage is thin or missing, so a benefits year that runs out early does not have to stop the work.
- Affordable Care. Sessions at $90 with Master’s-level psychotherapy interns, meant for people in financial hardship or without any insurance.
