Therapy for Highly Sensitive People

01. Stop People Pleasing
02.Set Healthy Boundaries
03.Regulate Your Emotions
04.Be Your True Self

Hi, I’m Jaclyn and I’m the owner (and also a psychotherapist) at True Self Counselling. After having spent a decade in corporate sales and marketing, I decided to 180 my life and become a therapist. Why?

Well, I had personally been helped by therapy for many years. I had seen many “good” therapists and many “less good” therapists. And as I continued through my journey, I noticed a couple things that often aren’t talked about enough. First, the therapists who have actual lived experience and have done their own work are able to guide and hold space for you – they know how to do it for you, because they learned how to do it themselves. I have found this to basically be essential. And second, that true healing is not purely cognitive, it’s not purely somatic, and it’s not purely spiritual. It’s not about wallowing in your emotion until it finally goes away, and it’s not about aggressively taking action to try and change the circumstance and “act as if” you feel better. No matter what action you take, healing comes down to the ability to have a conscious awareness of yourself, to recognize your habitual autopilot ways of living, and intentionally choose how you want to be different. And then, in taking action toward the way you want to be, all your “stuff” will come up. Your “stuff” – usually in the form of a painful emotion – is your work. Learning to love, accept, and be with the parts of ourselves we don’t like is the key component here, and that’s sometimes cognitive, sometimes somatic, and sometimes spiritual. A skilled clinician can help you feel out which it is, and when.

So I created True Self Counselling to fill that gap. I wanted our therapists to first and foremost have lived experience and to have done their own work. I wanted them to take an eclectic approach with clients, choosing the modalities of therapy that they truly believed in, not just something they read in a textbook.

Our therapists are encouraged to be their authentic selves, so that they can help you do the same. Because at the end of the day, that’s all we ever really want – to be the fullest, most authentic expression of who you really are.

At True Self Counselling, we wholeheartedly believe in the transformative power of self-awareness and healing. We are dedicated to guiding individuals on a journey to reconnect with their true selves. We believe that authenticity is not just a virtue but a path to profound personal growth and fulfillment.

Our passion and purpose stem from a deep understanding of the challenges faced by highly sensitive individuals and empaths who are stuck on the people pleasing train. We’ve witnessed the struggle even after trying various self-help methods, from positive thinking to therapy. Our mission is to provide a beacon of hope for those who still feel stuck, offering a unique approach to healing that truly makes a difference – even when nothing else has worked.

Our approach is founded on three core principles:

  • Trauma-Informed: We recognize that trauma isn’t merely what happened to us; it’s what occurs within us as a result of those experiences. We embrace a non-pathological perspective on therapy, rooted in attachment theory, and prioritize understanding the brain-body connection and nervous system regulation.

  • Neuroscience Based: We acknowledge that trauma resides not just in the body but also in the brain. Our methodology centers on the belief that our thoughts and beliefs shape our emotions, and unconscious or unquestioned maladaptive thoughts can keep us trapped in unproductive patterns. We help clients unlock these patterns and rewire their thinking.

  • Solutions Focused: We place great importance on healing the root of trauma. Simultaneously, we understand the urgency of our clients’ needs to feel better sooner rather than later. We teach our clients the skills they need to take positive action, even when confronted with negative emotions.

Our services are tailored to highly sensitive individuals and empaths who may struggle with issues such as people-pleasing, self-sabotage, overwhelm, overthinking, anxiety, ADHD, low self-esteem, overdrinking, procrastination, and emotional regulation difficulties. Our clients often have a trauma history or a past with complex childhood family dynamics. In present day, these problems manifest in many ways – mostly in our relationships: either with our partner, family of origin, friendships, children, at the workplace, and ultimately with ourselves.
